"There is no doubt in my mind that it is the classroom teacher that is the most important factor in how a child learns to read. More than any given method, or set of materials, or packaged program, a skilled teacher makes the difference.

..despite the increasing curricular demands and the changing nature of our student populations, it is still the power of dedicated, effective teachers that will continue to make the difference and ensure that all students leave us with the strategies, the skills, and the desire to be lifelong independent readers." The announcement of the Greater Washington Reading Council Reading Teacher of the Year was made during the Fall Conference on November 10, 2005.

Donna Mecca is the reading teacher at Armstrong Elementary School in Fairfax County.
This is what her colleagues say:

"I have had the privilege to work with Donna for the past six years, and I am awed by her dedication and focus on children as well as her high level of knowledge and expertise. I truly believe that having her as the reading teacher at our school has enabled my staff to implement a language arts program that meets the diverse needs of all children while also always looking forward to what is new and current in the field."
Cynthia West, Principal
"Above all, Donna works to instill a love of reading throughout the school community. She loves to read to students, and those students who have been part of her class Read-Alouds beg for her to return. They are mesmerized by her enthusiasm! Even struggling readers are stars, as they share their journal entries with her or participate in the Readers Theater activities she prepares for them...She is everyone's cheerleader -- encouraging both students and staff members to make reading a priority."
