Happy Summer GWRC Members!

I hope you are able to relax some this summer! We wanted to take a moment and thank you for being a GWRC member! Your support in our council has benefited our non-profit organization tremendously! Let me share a few of our successes this year!

1. GWRC offered one of the largest local council conferences in Virginia. The conference featured Linda Hoyt and 270 members were in attendance! Next year, we will be honored with Tim Rasinski's presence!

2. Members of our council had the opportunity to be published in our very own GWRC Journal! (BTW-The next deadline for submissions for this year's journal is June 30, 2011. Please see www.gwrc.net for more information).

3. Students and schools received over $2000 in grants for Community Outreach Projects and Teachers as Readers materials. Perhaps you are looking to have a project funded in the future? Please see www.gwrc.net for more information.

4. GWRC has supported literacy to other countries by purchasing an IRA membership for an educator abroad and supporting schools in the military and abroad. This year, we will be funding a reading project with a school in Guatemala led by one of our own members and Arlington teacher, Kathy Davin! More information will be posted on the website this summer.

5. This year, GWRC was recognized internationally as an Honor Council (29 years!!) and as a Merit Council by the Virginia State Reading Council. Both of these distinctions require extensive documentation by the GWRC Executive Board and Board of Directors demonstrating our leadership as a reading council and how we have served  and supported our community!

Over the summer, you will notice changes and updates to our website including:

1. Facebook has just become an addition to the old web page design. Please feel free to "Like it." :)

2. There will be a new logo coming soon to our website to celebrate our 55st birthday this year!

3. Our membership forms for next year will be up and ready to go by August 31, 2011 as will our registration forms for Tim Rasinski's conference! Just an FYI in advance, VSRA (Virginia State Reading Association) was looking into taking care of membership via PayPal (like we did on our own last year), but they have not set up the account yet, so we'll need to work with only paper copies at the beginning of the year so we don't disrupt the organization of their database. Using the paper copies will allow us to continue business as usual; we'll simply document your membership like we used to a couple years ago :)

Thank you again for your commitment to GWRC! We look forward to your continued support and please know how much it has meant to so many!

Sincerely,

Dr. Tiffany Brocious, NBCT
GWRC President

Hello GWRC Members!

It's looking like the true spring will be here soon! These sunny days bring such warmth and excitement!

This email is to remind you that, as GWRC members, you are eligible to apply for three grants that GWRC offers only to its members: Nancy King Professional Growth, Teachers as Readers, and Community Outreach. The deadline for grant submission is April 15, 2011. If your grant is chosen, it will be awarded by June 1, 2011 and we ask that you share a brief 100-word paragraph of how the grant money was/will be used to be posted on our website.

Another exciting opportunity for GWRC members only is the Teacher of the Year and the Administrator of the Year Award. If you would like to nominate someone for one of these awards, the deadline is also April 15, 2011.

More information on the grants and awards can be found at www.gwrc.net.

Finally, as we look forward to next year, we want to encourage members to actively participate in the organization. If you are interested in working on the Executive Board or on the Board of Directors, we welcome your involvement. GWRC represents the counties of Alexandria, Falls Church, Fairfax, Manassas, Arlington, Manassas City, Loudoun, Fauquier, and Prince William. Each year, our organization grows and we would love to have active representation from each of these counties. If you can commit to five meetings per year and would like to become more actively involved with GWRC, please email me, tiffany.brocious@lcps.org , by April 15, 2011 so we may include you in our first meeting.

Happy Spring!

Hello GWRC Members!

We are so excited about our upcoming conference this Thursday featuring Lynda Hoyt! The handouts she's sent for her presentation are full of information on nonfiction writing that will be useful to us as literacy instructors! The workshop will be interactive and participants will be engaged in writing throughout the workshop! We hope you are looking forward to a day full of learning, collegiality, good food, and vendors! A continental breakfast will be served at 7:30 AM and vendors will be set up for sales. The presentation will begin promptly at 8:10 AM. Finding a seat may be challenging; therefore, it is recommended you arrive early so the presentation is not interrupted. If you care to donate gently used or new, thin paperback books written in low-level English for the students in Kenya, we will have a box at the registration table for them. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!

If you are a GWRC member and cannot attend, please know you will be missed, but don't forget about the many opportunities GWRC offers only to its members.  You may want to consider applying for the many grants GWRC offers, submitting an article for next year's journal (only GWRC members are published in the journal), attending an after-school special, nominating a GWRC colleague for Administrator or Teacher of the Year, and/or attending a GWRC Board meeting. I have attached a list of upcoming dates for you to reference throughout the school year and hope it is helpful to you. In addition, if you would like to receive your free copy of the journal (which will be passed out at the conference), please contact your county's liaison (www.gwrc.net).

Speaking of liaisons, we are so ecstatic that all nine counties in the Greater Washington Reading Council area are represented by a liaison this year! We also welcome our George Mason University liaison! To all of our liaisons, please remember there is a Board meeting immediately following the Linda Hoyt conference. The meeting is open to any GWRC member and we welcome any newcomers who would like to become more involved in our organization.

We are very proud of our organization and hope it supports your literacy interests and needs. We are the third largest local reading council in the state of Virginia and would like to become even bigger and better. In order to do that, we need your help in spreading the good word of what we do with other educators in the field of literacy. We welcome ideas, volunteers, and expertise to help us continue to grow and to offer more experiences to members in our organization.

Sincerely,
Dr. Tiffany Brocious, NBCT
